Description
The City Hall of Patras is a neoclassical mansion which belonged to the family of the raisin merchant Makrygiannis and was built around 1880.
It is an imposing building, the face of which is located on Maizonos Street and extends from the corner with Pantanassis Street to the corner with Votsi Street.
It stands out for its imposing entrance, the marble balconies and the decoration of the facade with frames and sculptural decoration.
For some time the building hosted the Court of First Instance of Patras and in 1897 it was rented by the Municipality of Patras to install the City Hall.
It passed into the ownership of the Municipality in 1911, during the City Hall of Dimitrios Votsis.
During the City Hall of Ioannis Vlachos, in 1929, it was decided to decorate the interior of the Palace with works of art.
The work was undertaken by the painter from Patras Epamineondas Thomopoulos who performed two painting cycles, with landscapes of Patras the first, for the Mayor's office and with bucolic themes entitled "The Dream" from the Kalavrita tradition the second, for the great hall of the Primary School Council.
The building was damaged in the 1993 earthquake and extensive work was needed to restore it to its original glory, becoming an architectural gem for the city.
