Description
The Municipal Theater "Apollo" was founded on 11/2/1871 on the north side of Georgiou AD square and was put into operation on 10/10/1872.
Its architect is Ernst Ziller who designed inside three rows of galleries with many decorative elements, while its Neo-Renaissance façade is characterized by the gallery with the five arched openings that is repeated on the floor.
Ornate railings block the balcony while the roof parapet is decorated with ceramic statues made in Vienna.
The construction of the theater was preceded by the establishment of a committee in which the raisin merchants Th. and shares were issued.
From 1878 the lighting of the theater was done with gas while from 1899 with electric.
The Apollo Theater underwent renovations in 1899, 1956, 1970 and 1988.
The "Apollo" theater from the first year of its operation was the focus of the cultural life of Patras as it hosted a variety of performances mainly of Italian melodrama, but also Greek melodrama troupes, operettas and theatrical performances with the most important troupes and actors.
Since 1988 it is the home of D.I.P.E.TH.E. Patras being a cell of artistic creation, even hosting the concerts of the string orchestra "The Soloists of Patras", later "Patras Orchestra" and other events aimed at the cultural contribution to the city.
