POINTS OF INTEREST

History, reverence, and panoramic mountain views

Perched on the slopes of Mount Panachaiko at around 800 meters, the Holy Monastery of Omplou is one of Achaia’s most historic and contemplative pilgrimage sites. Founded in 1315, it played a significant role during the 1821 War of Independence as a refuge and base for fighters—earning the nickname “Patras’ Ark.”

Its architecture feels almost like a small fortress: monks’ cells encircle a refined katholikon at the center of a stone-paved courtyard. Inside, you’ll find old icons, treasured relics, and historic manuscripts, all wrapped in the calm, welcoming atmosphere of Orthodox monastic tradition.

One of the monastery’s most memorable highlights is the view. From its natural “balcony,” your gaze stretches over Patras and the olive groves, across the Gulf of Patras and toward the mountains of Central Greece—an ideal spot for a peaceful afternoon escape and a stunning sunset.
