POINTS OF INTEREST
Pantanassa, the jewel of Patras
The Church of Pantanassa, the second church in Patras dedicated to the Virgin Mary, was founded in 1857 and inaugurated on August 30, 1859. The project bears the signature of architect and director of the “Polytechnic School” Athanasios Frearitis and Lysandros Kaftantzoglou.
It is one of the most impressive examples of 19th-century neoclassical church architecture, with a majestic presence and exceptional proportions.
Its interior decoration reflects the grandeur of the era: the wall paintings were curated by Konstantinos Prinopoulos (1874), while the icons of the iconostasis were painted by Spyridon Chatzigiannopoulos.
The marble iconostasis and pulpit, crafted by the marble sculptor Benediktos Skalkotos, are masterpieces of high artistry, designed by the architect Spyridon Tzetzos.
The interior of the church also houses numerous votive offerings of artistic and historical value, donated by both prominent Patras families and humble, devout citizens.
The Church of Pantanassa remains to this day an iconic monument of Patras, with aesthetic, religious, and historical significance that transcends the boundaries of the city.
