Metropolitan church of Patras, featuring imposing architecture and a unique interior decoration of neoclassical grandeur.

POINTS OF INTEREST

Evangelistria in the heart of Patras.

The Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary is located on Maizonos Street, in the center of Patras, and serves as the city’s metropolitan cathedral. Its foundation was laid in 1842, the inauguration took place in 1846, and the building was completed in 1856.

Many families from Patras contributed financially to its construction, with a particularly notable presence of the Epirote merchants of the city. The church is of an imposing neoclassical style, with two large bell towers adorning its façade.

Its interior decoration was completed in 1893 and bears the signature of the architect Ernst Ziller. It features a gilded carved wooden ceiling, painted and written decorations, as well as eight large icons painted by the iconographer Spyridon Chatzigiannopoulos.

The church is also adorned with works by Kallivokas, Fanellis, and Stellakatos, while the rare Crucified Christ by Nikolaos Doxaras (1750) stands out as a highlight. Special prominence is given to the wood-carved elements, such as the pulpit, the sanctuary doors, the bronze chandeliers, and other artworks crafted by renowned artisans of the 19th and early 20th centuries.

After the 1993 earthquake, the church underwent structural restoration, while efforts to fully restore its interior decoration are still ongoing.

The Evangelistria church is one of the most important religious and artistic landmarks of Patras, intertwining the city’s spiritual identity with its neoclassical heritage.
