POINTS OF INTEREST

The oldest municipal library in Greece

The Patras Municipal Library was founded in 1908 during the mayoralty of Dimitrios Votsis and is the first municipal library in Greece. Its initial collection came from the Industrial Society and was housed at the building located at Gounari and Karaiskaki streets. The official inauguration took place on June 28, 1910.

During World War II, the library’s volumes were safeguarded in the basement of the Town Hall. In 1944, thanks to the initiative of local philologists and book lovers, the material was relocated and the library was reactivated. It was re-inaugurated in 1947, with its collection exceeding 18,000 volumes at the time.

Significant donations followed, enriching the library’s collection — including personal archives and book collections from notable figures such as Michalakopoulos, Gounaris, Vourloumis, and Maximos.

In 1948, the library acquired legal status as a Legal Entity under Public Law (ΝΠΔΔ), and in 1955 it was relocated to 110 Maizonos Street, where it continues to operate to this day — with its official inauguration held on May 20, 1957.

Today, it houses over 200,000 volumes of books, magazines, and newspapers, including numerous rare and valuable works dating back to the 16th century, as well as personal archives of prominent historical figures of Patras.

Its collection continues to grow with 2,500–3,000 new titles annually, thanks to a combination of donations and strategic acquisitions.

It serves as a living hub of knowledge, culture, and historical memory for the city of Patras and the wider region of Achaia.
