POINTS OF INTEREST

A neoclassical gem in the heart of Patras

The Papagiannis House is one of the most significant neoclassical buildings in Patras, designed by the renowned architect Ernst Ziller. It was built in 1872 for D. Kapranos, and by the late 19th century, it became the property of merchant and shipowner Papagiannis.

It is a three-story building with three façades: facing Vasileos Georgiou I Square, Gerokostopoulou Street, and Kanakari Street. The ground floor features impressive arcades with arched openings, reminiscent of 19th-century urban grandeur.

Its symmetrical façades and finely crafted architectural details, such as the ceramic columns and neoclassical statues adorning the third-floor terraces, give the building a distinguished architectural presence.

From the early decades of the 20th century until today, the Papagiannis House has housed the “Hermes” Commercial Association Club, a cultural institution hosting social, charitable, and cultural events, remaining an active part of Patras’ social life.
