The Lighthouse that Rekindles Memory

The modern Lighthouse of Patras stands prominently on the pier of the Fish Market, opposite Agios Andreas and the Tsivdi district, in an area that once hosted the city’s ancient Roman port. Today, the fish market remains a key hub for local trade.

In recent years, the area has been redeveloped by the Port Authority, with the construction of the new lighthouse at its center. The new structure was designed as an exact replica of Patras’ historic lighthouse, originally built in 1860 at the tip of Agios Nikolaos pier and demolished in 1972 during the dictatorship, as part of the harbor’s reorganization.

Today, the lighthouse no longer serves as a navigational aid but stands as a distinctive urban landmark. It is a popular spot for walks and relaxation for residents and visitors, helping revive the city’s connection with the sea and its historical identity.
